POLL: 46% of Clinton Voters Won’t Vote Obama

WASHINGTON (CNN) — One week after Sen. Hillary Clinton made a public show of unity with Sen. Barack Obama, a new survey suggests supporters of the New York senator are increasingly less likely to follow her lead.

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appear at a unity rally in Unity, New Hampshire, in June.

Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama appear at a unity rally in Unity, New Hampshire, in June.

A growing number of Clinton supporters polled say they may stay home in November instead of casting their ballot for Obama, an indication the party has yet to coalesce around the Illinois senator four weeks after the most prolonged and at times divisive primary race in modern American history came to a close.

According to a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Friday, the number of Clinton supporters who plan to defect to Republican Sen. John McCain’s camp is down from one month ago, but — in what could be an ominous sign for Obama as he seeks to unify the party — the number of them who say they plan to vote for Obama is also down, and a growing number say they may not vote at all.

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey completed in early June before the New York senator ended her White House bid, 60 percent of Clinton backers polled said they planned on voting for Obama. In the latest poll, that number has dropped to 54 percent.     READ THE REST

  1. Well, they didn’t need us anyhow. We’re sooooooooooo old coalition.

  2. “These things always take time to heal,” said Bill Schneider, CNN senior political analyst. “I think Clinton’s supporters are waiting to see if Sen. Obama will pick her as vice president. That would certainly be very healing to them.”

Ummm, Bill? Just how many PUMAs did you talk to before you came up with that WRONG analysis?

“If he doesn’t pick her, a later stage of grief is depression and then acceptance,” Schneider said. “In the end I expect Clinton supporters will accept Obama, because they will listen to Sen. Clinton, who has said the stakes are too high for Democrats to sulk.”

Hey, Bill? WRONG AGAIN. Why do you insist on making us grief-stricken voters working through stages of grief before we do as we’re told, rather than intelligent voters who won’t vote for someone unqualified to be POTUS?

“Former presidents are supposed to be above politics, but Bill Clinton couldn’t be above it in this campaign since his wife was a candidate for president,” Schneider said. “But he was seen as too political. Democrats thought it was appropriate for him to support his wife but not appropriate to get overly critical of Obama.”

Actually, Bill, it was only the Obamabots who are angry that Bill had the audacity to criticize The Precious. The rest of us LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the former President!

  3. “Actually, Bill, it was only the Obamabots who are angry that Bill had the audacity to criticize The Precious. The rest of us LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the former President!”

    LOOOOOOOOOOOVE him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Preach-it, Mystic4hillpuma…….

    No o.

  4. If Bill Schneider, the CNN political analyst quoted in this article was not so scary, this would be the funniest article I think I have read in this whole ordeal. But he is scary. Watch the video of his report. He is absolutely maniacal!

Notice the spin in this piece. Hillary is still as popular as she was a year ago. A month ago, Schneider would not have shown a visual of this stat. Instead, he would have said that her “unfavorables” are up (after he searched historical records until he found some obscure report—never mind where the report was from—never mind how far back he had to search) from 16 years ago to 44%! ;) Pander much?

How this guy can look straight into the camera and challenge us—actually tell us that we WILL comply—amazes me. Of course, this is once we hit the ‘acceptance’ stage of the grieving process, ‘Like our leader, Hillary Clinton, clearly has.’

The demagogues of the Democratic Party and the MSM have, in the past month, somehow morphed into Star Trek’s Borg. Their repetitious mantra: “Resistance is fu-tile.” They have obviously missed the memo that Jean-Luc Picard is a PUMA!

    Hillary’s #44!

  5. I like that poll. That poll sounds closer to the actual number of Hillary dems who will not vote for Obama–I think it’s even higher than that.

  6. Don’t point out any flaws in BHO or you’re a racist–even if you single-handedly did more to champion the cause of Blacks since MLK, Jr. Certainly, more, moRE, MORE than BHO did for District 11 in South Chicago.

Too bad, nationals are ignoring Chicago Sun-Times and local stations who have been trying to tell us all along. BHO ain’t no messiah.

BHO ain’t worth President Clinton’s shoe dirt. That’s pretty low ;).

    Hillary’s #44!

  7. NObama isn’t qualified to carry HILLARY’S luggage and I’ll never cast a single vote his way, NObama, Just Say NO Deal, PUMA!

  8. I agree with Katherine. There are more Hillary supporters who won’t vote for Oliar. But strategy will be important. The article says Hillary supporters will stay home. That might actually help Obama. It will be important to figure out what’s best in your state; different states have different rules for writing in votes. Some may choose to vote for McCain, but vote democratic on the rest of the ticket. The best answer would be a march on Denver and Hillary as the nominee!!

  9. What Mr. Schneider doesn’t understand is that I can’t get to depression, grief, or whatever. I’m stuck in the “anger” stage because, among other reasons, cotton-brained “journalists” continue to spew their psycho-babble at me. Mr. Schneider, keep your “day” job.

And speaking of your “day” job:

I read on CNN’s website that, “The Washington Times called Schneider ‘the nation’s election-meister’ and the Boston Globe called him ‘the Aristotle of American politics.” I call him a corrupt, lazy, excuse for a journalist. I would recommend that he get off his duff and go do some real journalistic work–if he can remember how–before he sits in front of a camera again and flaps his gums at people. The journalistic bar of excellence in this country is set WAY TOO LOW.

Mr. Schneider should concern himself with reporting on Mr. Obama and not so much on President Clinton, since word on the street is that Mr. Clinton is not running. (You heard it here first.)

There is a great deal of info out there on Mr. Obama that voters need to know (and should have known already). And it is because of flabby, flat-footed, talking heads who go to work and collect their paychecks that they don’t.

I hope the American public does not allow the operators of televised programming to continue to do their business in the way they have been. The internet is not going to be a safe haven for free speech because it is really quite vulnerable both internally and externally. The American public, our democracy, relies on a fair and balanced media and they have really let us down.

  10. You want to talk about issues–here’s an issue for you.

  11. You know Bill Schneider is dumb…not a clue!! The reason Bill Clintons popularity polls are down, is because BO and his cohorts smeared him with the racial crap, and so after all he did for the AA’s and what a good friend he was to them, they’ve now disrespected him…and Bill Clinton should never get over it, not ever…stay away Bill, don’t play nice…you don’t have to…they’ll all be sorry, because BO will not be as good to them as you and Hillary have been.

Hillary supporters will not get over it either…there never will be an ‘acceptance’ stage. Remember, we never did drink the koolaide, our minds were clear when we did our research and chose the most qualified, the most sincere, the most experienced, the most caring, the most intelligent and prepared candidate with a track record to prove her qualifications.

    NObama in NOvember

  12. You are correct, jeleanoro, when you point out how major stories were cobbled from words taken out of context by people desparately hoping and praying to be offended. Besides, people should be judged by their actions over the course of time more so than by their words spoken at any one point in time.

  13. We still love Bill, he was the best president we had since Kennedy.

Brazile, told us to stay home and not vote, so whatever she says I’m doing the opposite, I’ll vote for McCain if Hillary is not the nominee.

    Country before Party.

  14. Memo to Bill Schneider:

I do not drink Kool-Aid! Never have! Never will - especially the Barack brand! Stop trying to fool the American public, Mr. Schneider, into thinking that you really are a journalist! We know better!

  15. I’m sure Donna Brazile hopes we will stay home and not vote if Senator Clinton isn’t available since that will favor Obama. Obama doesn’t know what he believes in other than the fact that he wants to win. So, I will be voting for McCain.

  16. Sorry Hillary, I can’t resist….just for old time sake.

    Bill
    I love you so
    I always will
I look at you and see
    The passion eyes of May
Oh but am I ever gonna see
    My wedding day?
Oh I was on your side Bill
    When you were losin’
I’d never scheme or lie Bill
    There’s been no foolin’
But kisses and love won’t carry me
    Till you marry me Bill
    Bill
    I love you so
    I always will
And in your voice I hear
    A choir of carousels
Oh but am I ever gonna hear
    My wedding bells?
I was the one came runnin’
    When you were lonely
    I haven’t lived one day
    Not loving you only
But kisses and love won’t carry me
    Till you marry me Bill
    Bill
    I love you so
    I always will
And though devotion rules my heart
    I take no bows
    Oh but Bill you know
I wanna take my wedding vows
    Come on Bill
    Come on Bill
I got the wedding bell blues

  17. Some excerpts from the new story:

Poll: 43 percent of Dems still say they want Clinton as the party’s nominee
Number of Clinton supporters who plan to defect to McCain is down

In a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey completed in early June before the New York senator ended her White House bid, 60 percent of Clinton backers polled said they planned on voting for Obama. In the latest poll, that number has dropped to 54 percent.

43 percent of registered Democrats polled still say they would prefer Clinton to be the party’s presidential nominee. That number is significantly higher than it was in early June, when 35 percent of Democrats polled said they preferred Clinton to lead the party’s presidential ticket. [....]

Obama won 59 percent of support from registered Democrats polled in June; now he garners 54 percent.

Have I misread something? This seems to say that both 46% of HIllary supporters AND 46% of registered Democrats will not support Obama.

Anyway, 46% is 9 million, up from last month’s 39% of Hillary supporters, which was 7 million.

  18. The Atlantic City Press ran an article stating that casino dealers may be replaced by dealing machines. It is time to replace news analysts with robots. That might result in less bias in the “programming”. The media has lost all credibility.

  19. Oh, Monarch1… I thought those news analysts were already robots…they all seem to robotically speak what the programmers put on the screen in front of them!!!

Yes, the media has lost all credibility!

  20. The scariest thing I’ve heard about these polls is that a growing number of Hillary supporters say they will STAY AT HOME AND NOT VOTE. What these folks don’t realize is, this HELPS Obama. So please….lets all make it clear to as many people as possible…DO NOT STAY HOME ON ELECTION DAY…the only way to ensure an Obama defeat and make a statement is to have as many Clintonites as possible voting for McCAIN. We cannot grow weak…November is months away!

  21. Staying home may or may not help Obama, but I can’t vote for McCain for any reason.
Neither of these candidates shoiuld be allowed to pretend to govern this country in my opinion so I cannot vote for either one.

  22. I know so many people who are waiting until Aug and I do not think people will stay home some may. We must help people decide to vote for McCain. I think that we can help McCain reach out to these folks.
I know its probley just me but when I see them together I get sick on my stomach.
    PUMA

  23. I heard a newscaster say that there are now more registered Democrats than Republicans. I’m pretty sure our protests votes, whether we

    a. stay at home
    b. write in Hillary’s name
    c. vote for an Independent
    d. vote for McCain

will reduce the number voting Democrat–or for BHO if he’s the nominee. Reducing the number voting Democrat gives McCain the edge.

In an earlier blog, I confused Ron Paul with the Libertarian candidate, Bob Barr. Since people who would vote for him are extreme conservatives, voting Libertarian shaves votes off the far right end of McCain’s constituency thus reducing Republican numbers.

I have changed my position away from voting for McCain because of his money ties to Georgre Soros (MoveOn.org). Thankfully in Wisconsin, I can write in Hillary’s name and the vote will count for her.

BUT, I am not going to have to do this, because BHO’s campaign has already started to implode as trickles of the truth along with repeated flip-flops are increasingly becoming headlines.

Hillary Rodham Clinton is going to be our Democratic nominee in 2008, and subsequently, the 44th President of the United States of America!

I will be shading the circle for her!

    Hillary’s #44!

  24. It really pisses me off when these talking heads say we will “get over it”!!! And things like “where else can they go?” as if we really were robots who will vote for Obama!!! NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!

The only thing I have not made up my mind yet is whether I will write in Hillary’s name (which counts in New York) or vote for McCain. But I am still prayiing for a miracle that Hillary will be the nominee so I can vote for her!!

  25. These pundits who think ’stages of grief’ is written in cement in the Bible … or on stone tablets or something….

What they don’t realize is that even if you believe in those ’stages’, many of us have ALREADY gone through them and ACCEPT that we need to defeat Obama in November. :-)

  26. Just saw this very sensible comment:

    noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/07/05/obama-fails-to-attract-hillarys-supporters/#more-3437
    Comment by Mr. X | 2008-07-05 11:03:09

The reason the number of registered Dem Hillary supporters who will vote for McCain is down is because many of them are no longer registered Dems. Even so, Obama’s support in his own party is STILL dwindling. ….
I’d like to see a poll based on people who were registered Dems in Nov 2007 regardless of their current status.

  27. As hillaty said turn off your tv and do not listen to the pundits chatter chatter chatter the day away. And it was proven true in the primary that after all the chattering and hillary bashing they did hillary still won the popular vote and now their trying to do to mccain what they did to hillary. The best thing here is this time the DNC does get to select the president WE DO!!!

  28. Stay home is not as effective as voting for McCain. But it is still one vote less for BO, which is good news.

    SAY NO TO BO!!

Change that works for Mr. Wiggle

  29. It’s all good except a vote for Obama!

When November comes, if the race is close in your state, remember one vote for McCain counts the same as two stay-homes/thirdparties/writeins etc.

If the race isn’t close, a write-in or third party vote might send a more precise message.

At this point, trying to get Hillary nominated in August, imo it’s more impressive to say we’re voting for McCain.

  30. I am HAREDCORE Clinton supporter but i agree with the post above THE only way to make sure the Democrates learn a lesson is we must Vote Mccain in a landslide if Hillary is not the nominee…We cannot risk our country trying to endure an obama presidency!!

  31. there is NO WAY that I will risk it. I WILL vote FOR McCain to make sure my vote counts AGAINST o.

I am not willing to feel responsible for o getting away with his old chicago politics. no chances for me.

Staying home is not an option for me….but “Anything CAN happen.” (Hillary 08)

  32. Just a tip on who Bill Schneider is.

PNAC - Project for a New American Century,

remember the letter that was sent to Bill Clinton when he was Pres demanding that he attack Iraq, and he wouldnt ?

Schneider signed it along with Jebbie , Cheney, Kristol and a bunch of other names you would now recognize, that’s who Schneider is (I think we’re speling his name wrong). Anyway google it - you’ll see his name along with the others. Strange those who are on our airwaves , eh what?

    K.
    Party Unity My Arse

  33. Every morning I wake up and ask myself, “Who’s on first?”

  34. I voting for McCain….I want to make sure it counts against BO and the Democratic Party…..I feel if I stay home and don’t vote,I’ll be letting them get away with what they did to Bill and Hillary……The only way I will vote for a Democrat is when Hillary is at the top of the ticket where she belongs.I’m not crazy about McCain, but I am afraid of BO. Rev. Jeremiah Wright do I need to say more?

  35. Okay, Kellingesq, so Schneider is a “journalist” with neo-con tendencies who is bashing the Clintons, so that supports my guess that Republicans view Senator Clinton as the stronger candidate. And that would put the ball back in Rupert Murdoch’s court? Does he own CNN? And the DNC will be out to lunch for how long?

I also note from mystic4hillpuma’s post that the good Dr. Schneider feels it would be very “healing” if Obama picked Senator Clinton as his VP. Wouldn’t that be nice if they could go together on a vacation cruise on the Titanic?

  36. Dean’s a Republican rat or an idiot–it can’t be anything else.

  37. The problem with writing in Hillary is that it is one less vote for McCain. Remember nearly 18 million voted for Obama in the primary just as they did Hillary. That means there are a TON of people voting for him already, in addition to the Hillary supporters who do end up backing him. Thats a whole lot of votes in comparison to what McCain is gonna get. Republicans are NOT energized about their nominee for the most part. Us PUMA Dems need to give our votes to McCain so he can compete with the millions of voters for Obama. Otherwise, we’re looking at an Obama presidency. Seriously, think about the math for a moment….approx. 18 million loyal Obama supporters + approx. 50% of Hillary Dems who will end up supporting him= APPROX. 27 MILLION VOTES!!!! I doubt very seriously McCain will get anywhere near 27 Million votes WITHOUT OUR HELP. Hell, I’m not even sure there are that many registered Republicans right now….and if there are, some may stay home on election day b/c McCain’s not conservative enough for them. So, us loyal Clintonians HAVE to do our part!!!! If we ever want to see Hillary become President in the future, we have to defeat Obama NOW.

  38. Perfectlt stated LADYESQ1, I am with you 100%.

  39. There is no way that I will vote for McCain.
Constantly entreating HRC’s supporters to do so diminishes the impact of our collective outrage by giving credence to those who would dismiss us as being undercover Republicans.
While many may chose to cross over to the dark side in protest, that action is simply not an option for me.
I will continue to work for an outcome in this as yet formally unfinished nominating process that ensures that it never comes down to the inevitability of an Obama or McCain presidency.

  40. What if the unthinkable does happen in Denver.

I know it’s a terrible Catch-22, but John McCain is going to be nominated by the Republicans unless something drastic happens. So assuming nothing does, don’t we have to vote for somebody who actually stands the best chance of beating BO? Isn’t the PUMA objective to stop The Pretender from becoming president ? It seems that McCain would be the only alternative - like it or not.

  41. Nothing I’ve read about PUMA objectives says that voting for McCain is the only option.
I adhere to the I Own My Own vote principle, that whoever I vote for has to earn it.
If neither candidate does, neither candidate gets it.
The way I see it, there is no “lesser of two evils” here.
Whichever of these two guys wins, evil prevails.

  42. I think we have time to decide what we’ll do in November…

First we should concentrate on the convention, and getting Hillary fairly represented…with all the policy changes, negative publicity, and arrogance of BO…this nominee selection could be turned on it’s head! I really feel that by the convention, there will be BO people jumping ship! Let’s all pray, and remain positive…we need POSITIVE ENERGY!!! Negative energy brings everyone down…STAY UP PEOPLE UP!!!

  43. FYI…Kelligesq…re: PNAC…William Schneider, Jr. (not to be confused with the right-wing media pundit William Schneider) has served on several presidential commissions and government advisory bodies dealing with counter-terrorism, intelligence, etc, etc, etc,

CNN’s Schneider is just a media schmuck!

  44. Here’s my prediction:

If BHO is the d. nominee, Republicans will come out of the woodwork (or off the golf courses as Bob Beckel said) to vote against him. It won’t matter how they feel about John McCain. BHO will unite the Republican party for him.

If HRC is the d. nominee, many Republicans will stay at home because they won’t cross their party, but many–esp. Rep. women–will cross over and vote for her. They see her as the stronger candidate because they see her a trustworthy, strong moderate.

We need to make sure Republicans have these options by doing everything we can to ensure our Auguust convention is open and that Hillary’s name is on the first ballot.

Our open convention will guarantee a landslide victory in November for Hillary Rodham Clinton!

  45. It’s Hillary or McCain for President. There is no wavering over here. I’m so over the, “Grief Cycle,” I can’t begin to tell you. I believe the Democratic Party is in for a stunning awakening come the General Election, IF Senator is not the party’s nominee. If the pundits think Clinton supporters are upset now, wait until the post Convention fallout.
    Katie, bar the door.

  46. Thanks for the corrected info, jeleanoro. I looked up William Schneider, Jr., neo-con, and CNN’s William Schneider, garden variety media schmuck, as noted. Discovering this distinction makes me feel a bit more positive in a convoluted sort of way.

  47. …IF Senator Clinton is not the nominee.. :D

  48. This Bill Schneider fellow has got it wrong. Hillary didn’t die, so how are we moving through stages of grief??!!?? Hillary really didn’t lose so I still don’t get it. I haven’t moved from my initial perspective on the Obama from day one. Once I knew that McCain was the Republican nominee my selection order was decided. #1 Hillary, #2 McCain and never never the Obama. The Obama was first just preaching, then when pushed to express his issues he mirrored Hillary’s, and I decided then I could not vote for someone like that. So Mr. Bill Schneider needs to go back to school because he doesn’t have a clue.

  49. Heh. Most of us went through that grief weeks ago and ‘accepted’ McCain as the next best choice. :-)

  50. If Hillary isn’t the nominee, I’ll be holding my nose when I vote for McCain in Nov.

As a lifelong Democrat, I will NEVER vote for Obama. He can beg, borrow, and we all know how he stole the nomination. No way, no how., no O.

    Hillary or McCain 08
